Adventure Elopement vs. Luxury Elopement – What’s the Difference?

So you’re planning an elopement or intimate wedding! First of all, congrats. But somewhere between your third Pinterest board and your fifth “how much does an elopement actually cost” Google search, you’ve run into two terms that get thrown around like they mean the same thing: adventure elopement and luxury elopement.

Here’s the truth: they’re not opposites, and they’re not the same thing either. Let’s break down the nitty gritties so you know exactly what you’re planning (and what to ask for when you book your vendors).

The Quick Version

Adventure elopement = about the terrain. Think mountaintops, slot canyons, cliffs, remote trailheads – locations that require some actual effort (and maybe a permit) to reach.

Luxury elopement = about the experience. Think a private chef, a floral installation that looks like it belongs in a magazine, a helicopter instead of a hike, the works.

You can have one without the other. You can also have both at once, which if you ask me is where things get really fun.

Adventure Elopements: All About the Location

An adventure elopement is defined by where you’re standing when you say “I do.” We’re talking red rock cliffs, alpine lakes, slot canyons, or a mountain summit at sunrise. The whole point is that the location itself is the main character of your day.

Adventure elopements usually mean:
• A hike, scramble, or 4×4 ride to get to your spot
• Weather-dependent planning (and a backup plan, because Utah wind does not care about your veil)
• A smaller guest list, since not everyone’s up for a two-mile trek in wedding shoes
• A photographer who’s comfortable off-trail (ask me how I know)

The budget on an adventure elopement can honestly go either way. You can DIY most of it and keep costs low, or you can go all-in on gear, permits, and a full production. Adventure describes the setting, not the spend.

Luxury Elopements: All About the Experience

A luxury elopement isn’t about location at all. It’s about how much of the day is elevated, planned, and produced for you instead of by you. This is where the helicopter rides, the floral installations, the private catering, and the “we thought of literally everything” planning comes in.

Luxury elopements usually include some combination of:
• Full floral design – arches, installations, bouquets that look like they took a full floral team a full day to build (because they did)
• Elevated transportation – helicopters, vintage cars, ATVs, whatever gets you to your location in style
• A planning team – someone (hi, it’s me) handling logistics, vendor coordination, and the “wait, do we need a permit for this” questions before you even have to ask them
• Full-day or multi-day documentation – when you’ve built a day this intentional, you want every second of it caught on camera

A luxury elopement can happen literally anywhere: your backyard, a private estate, a five-star resort. It doesn’t need a mountain. It needs intention and a bigger budget for the experience itself.

So… Can You Have Both?

YES. And my friend, this is my absolute favorite kind of day to shoot.

Picture this: a private helicopter drops you at a red rock overlook nobody else can reach. There’s a full floral arch waiting, set up by a team who hiked it in ahead of you. You say your vows with a 300-mile view behind you, then head to a private luxury picnic set up specifically for the two of you as the sun goes down.

That’s an adventure elopement AND a luxury elopement, at the same time. The terrain is wild. The experience is fully produced. Nothing about it is “roughing it,” even though you’re standing somewhere most people will never stand.

What This Means for Your Planning

If you’re picturing your day and wondering which one you’re actually planning, ask yourself:
• Is the location doing the heavy lifting, or is the production doing the heavy lifting? (Or both – no wrong answer here.)
• Do you want a planner-level experience, or are you comfortable DIY-ing the logistics?
• What’s actually non-negotiable for you – the view, or the floral installation, or the once-in-a-lifetime mode of transportation?

There’s no rulebook that says you have to pick one lane. The couples I work with most love blending the two: wild, remote, jaw-dropping locations, paired with a level of planning and production that makes the whole day feel effortless (for them, anyway. I’m doing plenty behind the scenes, pinky promise).

Ready to Plan Yours?

Whether you’re dreaming of a cliffside “just us” ceremony or a fully produced, helicopter-assisted, floral-installation kind of day (or both), I’d love to help you plan it. I’ve eloped myself, I know Utah’s best-kept location secrets, and I handle the “wait, do we need a permit for this” logistics so you don’t have to.
